Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What are the symptoms of ADHD in children and adolescents?
ADHD symptoms generally fall into two main presentations: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. A diagnosis is made when these behaviours are persistent and significantly impact the child’s life at home, school, or with friends.
Is there a single test that can definitively confirm ADHD?
No. There is no single medical or computer test that can diagnose ADHD on its own. It is a clinical diagnosis based on interviews, questionnaires, observation, and rating scales.
Do you accept direct referrals from parents?
Yes! You can refer your child directly without seeing your GP first. We also accept referrals via the NHS 'Right to Choose' pathway.
How long does the assessment process take?
The full assessment typically takes between 4 to 6 weeks. This includes gathering information from home and school and providing a comprehensive report.
What if my child does not have ADHD?
Your time is still valuable. We will explain the findings clearly and discuss other possible reasons (anxiety, sleep disorders, learning difficulties, etc.). You will still receive a detailed report with recommendations.
Can my child continue seeing their GP for prescriptions?
Yes. Once the child is stable on medication, we can request a Shared Care Agreement so your GP can prescribe on the NHS.
How many appointments are needed for the assessment?
Usually 1 to 2 appointments. These can be a mix of face-to-face, video, or telephone appointments depending on your needs.
Do both parents need to attend the appointments?
We strongly encourage both parents to attend if possible, but it is not mandatory. One parent can attend and we can gather more information through questionnaires or follow-up calls.
What medications are used to treat ADHD?
We use both stimulant (Methylphenidate or Amphetamine-based) and non-stimulant medications (such as Atomoxetine). The doctor will explain everything in detail and find the best option for your child.
Is medication the only treatment?
No. Medication is often the most effective for core symptoms (around 80%), but we also recommend behavioural strategies, parenting support, and school accommodations for the best long-term results.
How soon can we get an appointment?
Unlike the long NHS waiting lists, we can usually offer appointments within 1 to 2 weeks. Please contact us for current availability.
What is your cancellation policy?
We kindly ask for at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
